Eliminating Fear With Sedation Dentistry

sedation dentistry Stuart FLIt’s estimated that almost 23% of Americans neglect regular oral care because of dental anxiety. The main concerns range from the feeling of pain, to the sight of instruments, or previous negative experiences, and even the sterilized smell of a dental office can trigger unwelcome stress. Yet, the biggest issue with dental anxiety is that, if left untreated, it unnecessarily affects oral health, which in turn can lead to dental treatments that require spending a lot more time in the dentist’s office.

Fortunately, there are many safe and secure techniques that eliminate panic, like sedation dentistry

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Depending on the extent of patient anxiety or phobia, various grades of sedation can be used. This can range from anti-anxiety drugs and tranquilizers, to the use of nitrous oxide, more commonly referred to as laughing gas.

Sedation quickly produces a state of relaxation that significantly reduces feelings of discomfort and pain. About 60% of general dental care and 90% of pediatric dentistry are performed with sedation.

At Premier Dentistry it can be is as easy as swallowing a pill. A pill that you can swallow an hour before your visit. By the time you get to your appointment, you’ll be feeling relaxed and gradually move to a deeper state of sedation. You’ll still have the ability to respond to any questions when asked, but will not be aware of the treatment. You will be monitored all during the procedure and after it is finished, a friend will drive you home. After about an hour, you will be back to normal.

Of course, there are additional methods that compliment sedation dentistry;

5 Ways to Reduce Anxiety Levels

If you’re nervous about your next visit with us, here are some additional tips to control your anxiety:

1. Share your fears. Convey your feelings to our staff. If you express your concerns, Our dentists will tailor the treatment to your needs.

2. If you’re bothered by typical sounds in a dental office, bring a portable audio and headphones for listening to music. A patent’s favorite tunes typically put patients at ease.

3. Eat foods with high protein content and avoid caffeine or sweets. Protein has a relaxing effect while caffeine and sugar are both stimulants that exacerbate feelings of anxiety.

4. Bring sunglasses to alleviate bright lights. According to neurologist, the brain responds to light and colors, while lighting is central to dental work, it often can be fear-provoking in patients experiencing anxiety.

5. Lastly, prepare yourself mentally for your visit. Often, courage will never come into play until you face your fear.

Even in the most stressful situations, you can count on the doctors at Premier Dentistry to help you to dramatically reduce your anxiety level.

(At this time however we are only treating patients with dental sedation in our Jupiter office)

Stuart Dentist Shares Thoughts About Invisalign® Braces

invisalign-smiles-logoInvisalign® braces provide a teeth-straightening option that is less visible and less obtrusive than traditional metal braces. At Premier Dentistry of Stuart we work with our patients to help them understand Invisalign and determine if it’s right for them.

As the premier Stuart Dentist for Invisalign braces, we are happy to share with you some of the basic facts about Invisalign.

What are Invisalign Braces?

Invisalign braces are an orthodontic treatment comprised of “aligners” which are clear plastic trays that are customized specifically for your teeth so that they straighten out your teeth gently over time.

Perhaps the most unique and appealing feature of Invisalign braces is that they are barely visible since the trays (a series of clear aligners) are made from a nearly transparent thermoplastic material.

What are some benefits of Invisalign braces compared to traditional braces? Does Invisalign work?

Invisalign braces are typically less painful than traditional braces, and because they are clear they are hardly visible when worn and many people may not even notice that you are wearing them.

Another appealing feature of Invisalign braces is that they can be easily removed, which makes brushing and flossing your teeth much easier than with traditional braces which may catch bits of food that can cause tooth decay.

How do Invisalign braces work?

Once you have decided that you want Invisalign, the dentist will use 3-D computer-imaging technology to create a treatment plan that will track your progress from the current position of your teeth to the desired final position of your teeth.

Once the Invisalign treatment plan has been prepared, then the series of customized clear plastic trays (aligners) are made specifically for your mouth and teeth. Every two weeks you will change to a new aligner as your teeth slowly move into their desired positions.

Stuart Dentist Invisalign:

How long does the Invisalign orthodontic treatment take to complete?

A typical time for completion of the Invisalign treatment is about one year. This may vary considerably depending upon the initial position of your teeth and how much alteration of their current position is desired.

Some people complete the Invisalign treatment much sooner than one year, perhaps even if half that amount of time. Typically the treatment with Invisalign braces will be completed in a significantly shorter amount of time than traditional braces.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Another drawback of traditional braces is the need to visit your orthodontist every month and a half to have the wires on your braces tightened.

This is not necessary with Invisalign, and since you change your trays ever two weeks your teeth undergo more continuous realignment in smaller increments than with wire braces, and thus there is typically less pain associated with Invisalign as the movement is more gradual.

Stuart Dentist Offers Dental Hygiene Tips | Tongue Scraping Halitosis (Bad Breath)

What is tongue scraping for oral hygiene?

The term tongue scraping refers to the process of removing material that may accumulate on your tongue between the small bumps (taste buds) on the tongue’s surface.

What is the purpose of tongue scraping?

A primary reason that people engage in tongue scraping is to improve their overall oral hygiene. Using a scraper to remove the “gunk” from your tongue can help prevent or reduce gum problems and tooth decay and also decrease the possibility of halitosis, also known as bad breath.

What are tongue scrapers and how do they work?

There are various types of tongue scraper though the common tongue scraper consists of a simple piece of flexible, soft plastic which is bent into an arch and pulled over the tongue’s surface, usually two or three times as necessary to remove any debris or “gunk” that has built up on the tongue’s surface.

When is the best time to use a tongue scraper?

Typically the tongue is scraped before brushing the teeth.

What are some of the benefits of using a tongue scraper?

One of the benefits of tongue scraping is helping to eliminate bad breath, also known as halitosis. Smokers and those who have fungal growth (the condition known as “brown hairy tongue”) on their tongue will see a noticeable improvement after using a tongue scraper.

Is it necessary to use a tongue scraper if I already brush my teeth and also my tongue thoroughly twice each day?

Proper brushing and flossing goes a long way toward ensuring good dental hygiene and preventing dental problems. However, the additional practice of tongue scraping may also contribute to good oral health and prevent or eliminate halitosis (bad breath).

If you are unsure then talk to your dentist about things you can do to improve oral hygiene, and make sure to brush your teeth and floss properly, and keep up with your regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings. Proper dental hygiene will help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease which are primary causes of unpleasant breath.

Are You Compromising Your Teeth With Sweets?

no sugarIf you are one of the millions of Americans who enjoy sweets you probably are not aware of the damage that you could be perpetrating on your teeth. Our teeth have many daily threats, but one of the most damaging of these are sweetened foods. It is known that sugar destroys tooth’s enamel, causes discoloration, and even tooth decay.
no-sugar

But why is that? And why is sugar so harmful? It just doesn’t seem fair!
How can something that is so yummy, has so much public appeal and can be purchased at any corner store, have the potential to cause our teeth so much damage?

The problem with sugar

  • The bacteria that is found on our teeth use sugar as a form of energy supply. The more sugar, the longer they last.
  • They multiply faster and grow quicker when excessive sugar is consumed.
  • Some bacteria use the sugar as a form of glue to stick to the teeth. This makes harder, if possible, for the removal of bacteria. If this process continues for a long period of time, discoloration and decay of the teeth occurs.
  • Sugar decalcifies and demineralizes teeth, an effect that is very damaging.

Did you know that the highest rate of cavities is caused solely by sugar? Did you also know that within just minutes of consuming sweet foods, the bacteria in your mouth will start producing the acids that are the direct cause of tooth decay?

But what can I do to prevent it from happening to me?

Sugar and sweeteners are a threat to our dental health and we must manage it. So how do we do it?

1. It is highly recommended that a person brushes his or her teeth at least twice a day. Bacteria gets attached to the teeth if not removed properly. In cases such as this, a strong plaque is formed and the person is much more likely to experience tooth decay and demineralization. Additionally, it is suggested by most dentists that a person brush their teeth for at least two full minutes in order to help remove plaque. Unfortunately most people only brush their teeth for less than 30 seconds.

2. Brushing only completes a part of the job of ridding your mouth of these harmful bacteria. It removes the bacteria from the teeth, but not in between them. That is why it is also recommended that you floss your teeth, and floss them frequently. Flossing should be preformed at a minimum of once per day. You will know if you are flossing enough because you will no longer bleed or hurt when you are doing it. Proper flossing between the teeth will remove any bacteria that could not be removed by the toothbrush.

3. Go to your Stuart dentist, at least every once in six months. The reason is simple, cleaning and prevention. There are many things that can be going on with your teeth that you may not recognize until it is possibly too late; such as tooth decay, gum disease, or other disorders. However, when you go to the dentist for your regular cleanings, your dentist will be able to spot anything out of the ordinary and help to resolve any issues immediately, most times before any serious damage can occur.

In a nutshell, in order to keep your pearly whites looking good and staying trouble free, try to consume less sugary foods if possible, brush your teeth twice a day, floss your teeth frequently (once a day), And be sure to visit us at Premier Dentistry of Stuart at least once every six months for cleaning. Make this your routine, and you will hang on to those beautiful teeth for as long as you like!

Daily Oral Hygiene Can Prevent Gum Disease

main man in blue shirt brushing teethThe most important part of oral hygiene starts at home. Brushing and flossing, along with regular dentist visits can help prevent dental disease, including gum disease, caries, and loose teeth, unfortunately, those are the very things people neglect the most. Because of this, the incidence of gum disease and tooth decay is at an all-time high.

Stopping Dental Disease

Tooth decay can attack the teeth at any age. In fact, 84% of those aged 17 years old  are suffering from this condition. When not treated, tooth decay can cause pain and can lead to tooth loss. Losing teeth can affect how you look and how you feel about yourself and your ability to chew and speak. Treating cavities can also become expensive, so prevention and early treatment are important.

It may surprise you to know that 60% of those aged 15 years and younger suffer from gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, thus kids entering their pre-teen years are requiring gum disease treatment. Gingivitis is generally a result of an over accumulation of dental plaque, but it can be controlled.

If you remove plaque regularly, and follow good oral hygiene habits, your gums will remain in a healthy state. However, when you neglect professional cleanings, plague builds up, leading to most serious diseases of the gums.

Visiting the dentist

The main reason you should visit the dentist every six months is prevention. Regular dental cleanings can prevent tooth decay, and minimize gum disease that ultimately put your dental and oral health at risk.

Stuart dentist, Dr Dan Casel or Dr Patrick Williams, experts in adult dentistry, will examine your teeth, your gums and other important parts of your mouth. These Stuart dentists will also examine your jaw joints. To do this, they use a mirror and a metal instrument used to make it easier to check the crown – the visible part – of each tooth. This is done to check the scale and evidence of looseness in the teeth or cavities. The dentist may also check your bite and the way your teeth fit together (also called occlusion).

Dr Dan Casel or Dr Patrick Williams will examine the general condition of your gums, which should be firm and pink, rather than fragile, swollen or inflamed. Your dentist will also use instruments to check the periodontal pockets, the slight depression where each tooth is attached to the gum. Deep pockets that are receding from the teeth are evidence of gum disease and will require gum disease treatment before the problem becomes more advanced.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

Dark hair girl holding tooth brushBrushing and flossing are the most important steps you can take to keep your teeth and gums healthy, and while brushing teeth is important, alone it does not remove the heavy coating of plague stuck to your teethes enamel. Teeth require professional cleanings in order to remove plague.

Professional teeth cleaning at the Premier Dentistry of Stuart is performed by a dental hygienist. The cleaning involves removing hardened tartar deposits using a high frequency ultrasound instrument. After cleaning, the dental hygienist will polish your teeth. This process cleans and smooths the surfaces of your teeth, removing topical stains and making it difficult for plaque to adhere to your teeth. Finally, the hygienist may apply a fluorine compound or sealant to help prevent tooth decay.

It’s likely that by neglecting your oral hygiene today, it will certainly lead to future dental problems. Schedule a consultation at Premier Dentistry of Stuart today.

Choosing a Toothbrush and Dental Cleaning Tips

Everything You Need To Know About Toothbrushes and Great Oral Hygiene

A basic and essential component of good oral hygiene is a toothbrush. At Premier Dentistry of Stuart, Florida we try to help our patients make good oral hygiene decisions including choosing the right toothbrush for optimal dental health.

Here are some basic tips that will help ensure you choose the proper toothbrush for excellent dental care.

What should I look for when selecting a toothbrush?

Today when looking for a toothbrush you will come across a variety of different styles, colors and designs that sometimes makes the choice daunting. There are also more specialized products including electricity and even sonic waves.

Family smilingOne basic rule of choosing a toothbrush is to make sure it bears the Seal of Acceptance of the American Dental Association (ADA). This ensures that any claims made on the packaging are correct, and also that the toothbrush met the ADA’s testing requirements for quality and safety.

What type of toothbrush bristles are best?

Choose a toothbrush with polished, soft bristles that have rounded ends. Harder bristles can cause harm to your gums and should be avoided.

What is the best shape toothbrush to choose?

Choose a shape of toothbrush that fits comfortably in your hand. This varies for different people so the best method is to just try the shape you think will work best for you and see if it feels okay as you hold it.

Make sure the toothbrush still feels comfortable even when you are trying to brush your hardest-to-reach teeth.

How often do I need to buy a new toothbrush?

A good rule of thumb for excellent oral hygiene is to get a new toothbrush about every three months. If you notice that your toothbrush is getting a lot of wear and tear that has frayed the bristles then you should replace it sooner.

An older and worn toothbrush will not be as effective in removing harmful bacteria from your teeth as a new toothbrush. If you are sick then you once you get better it is also a good idea to purchase a new toothbrush.

Is it a good idea to use an electric toothbrush?

While a manual toothbrush should work fine for most people, those who are disabled or very old and have lost some of their manual dexterity may find it easier to use an electric toothbrush.

Make sure to read the instructions and use the electric toothbrush correctly. Do not apply too much pressure, and take care to use the proper speed, head size and bristle rotation as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Are the new sonic toothbrushes effective?

A relatively new sonic wave technology works to remove harmful bacteria with sonic waves. Without even touching the surface these toothbrushes can get rid of plaque in very hard to reach locations such as beneath the gum line and between your teeth.

Consult Your Dentist About the Best Toothbrush for You

If you have any questions about which toothbrush to choose for your particular needs make sure to consult with your dentist. Also make sure to brush and floss twice each day, and maintain regular dentist appointments for teeth cleaning and check ups.
